Novena to the Holy Spirit — Day 1: Come, Holy Spirit

The 9 days between Ascension Day and Pentecost Sunday are among the most powerful days in the Christian calendar. This is not a coincidence. This is a pattern.

After Jesus ascended into heaven, His disciples did not go home and go back to their normal lives. They gathered together. They prayed. They waited. For nine days.

And on the tenth day — Pentecost Sunday — the Holy Spirit came.

That nine-day wait is where the Novena to the Holy Spirit comes from. It is the oldest novena in the Christian church — and it begins today.

What Is the Novena to the Holy Spirit?

A novena is simply nine days of focused, intentional prayer.

The word comes from the Latin novem, meaning nine. The first novena was not invented by a saint or a pope. It was lived by the apostles themselves, following the direct instruction of Jesus in Acts 1:4.

Acts 1:4 — “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”

They waited. They prayed. They received.

This is the invitation to you today. For the next nine days, before Pentecost Sunday on May 24, 2026 — pray. Wait. Expect.

Why Does This Novena Matter in 2026?

Many Christians celebrate Christmas and Easter faithfully every year. But Pentecost — the day the Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh — quietly passes by without the same weight.

Yet Pentecost is the event that changed everything.

  • Without Pentecost, there is no church.
  • Without Pentecost, there are no gifts of the Spirit.
  • Without Pentecost, the disciples remain hidden behind locked doors.

After Pentecost, those same disciples walked into the streets of Jerusalem and preached boldly. Three thousand people were saved in a single day.

That same Holy Spirit is available to you right now. The Novena is a nine-day invitation to open your heart and ask for more of Him.

The Scripture for Day 1

John 14:26 — “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Advocate. The Comforter. The Helper. The one sent in His own name.

This is not a distant, abstract force. This is a Person. The third Person of the Trinity. And He was sent specifically to be with you — to teach you, to remind you, to guide you into all truth.

The Day 1 Focus — Welcoming the Holy Spirit

On Day 1 of the Novena, the focus is simple: welcome.

So many believers have never truly welcomed the Holy Spirit into their daily lives. They believe in Him as a doctrine. They recite His name in the Creed. But they have never sat quietly and said, “Holy Spirit, You are welcome here. Come and fill every part of me.”

That is your prayer today.

Day 1 Prayer — Come, Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit.

I welcome You today — not just as a doctrine, but as a Person.

I welcome You into my home. Into my mind. Into my heart.

Teach me what I do not know.

Remind me of what Jesus has spoken.

Fill every empty space in me with Your presence.

I am waiting. I am expectant. I am open.

Come, Holy Spirit. Come.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

What to Do on Day 1

  1. Find a quiet moment — even five minutes — and pray the prayer above.
  2. Read John 14:16-26 slowly. Let every verse settle.
  3. Ask one question in prayer: “Holy Spirit, what do You want to do in my life this Pentecost season?”
  4. Write down whatever comes to your heart. This is how He speaks — in the quiet.

What Happens Over the Next 9 Days

Each day of the Novena, we will focus on one aspect of the Holy Spirit:

  • Day 1 — Welcoming the Holy Spirit (today)
  • Day 2 — The Holy Spirit as Comforter
  • Day 3 — The Holy Spirit as Teacher
  • Day 4 — The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Day 5 — The Fruit of the Holy Spirit
  • Day 6 — The Holy Spirit and Prayer
  • Day 7 — The Holy Spirit and Scripture
  • Day 8 — Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
  • Day 9 — Pentecost Eve — Final Preparation

A Word of Encouragement Before You Begin

You do not need to be a theologian to pray this Novena. You do not need to have a perfectly quiet house. You do not need to have it all together.

The disciples in that upper room were frightened, confused, and grieving. They did not feel ready. They did not feel qualified.

But they prayed anyway. And the Holy Spirit came anyway.

He is not waiting for you to be perfect. He is waiting for you to be available.

Come, Holy Spirit.

Type AMEN in the comments if you are beginning this Novena today. 🙏
